Road & Sidewalk Maintenance
The road maintenance program involves dust control, sidewalk maintenance, ditching, shouldering, runoff, snow removal and ice control.
Roads & Sidewalk Repairs
When the ground thaws in the spring or it rains, potholes can develop. From May to September, repairs are undertaken on roads and sidewalks that are identified in the regular patrols and annual survey of street and sidewalk conditions.
All repairs are prioritized and the most severe ones are scheduled first.
Property Owner Sidewalk Clearing Responsibilities
Pursuant to the Property Maintenance and Nuisance Abatement Bylaw, snow removal from your sidewalk is required during the winter months. Removing the snow and ice from your sidewalk is mandatory after every snowfall. It is also prohibited to deposit snow and ice upon any street or sidewalk in such a way as to create a safety hazard.
Priority Snow Clearing of Roads
City crews and contractors plow, windrow, sand, salt and remove snow from city owned roads throughout the winter. For snow clearing purposes, the city classifies roads as priority 1, 2, or 3.
Priority 1 roads must be cleared first to ensure the school bus, fire trucks, emergency services, and the majority of the traveling public have a safe route on which to travel. Priority 1 roads include:
- Dome Road
- Hills in Dawson Proper (Streets running from 5th Ave to 8th Ave)
- Major Arterial, 5th Ave and access to Hospital and School
Priority 2 roads are cleared after Priority 1 roads are complete. Priority 2 roads include:
- Streets & Avenues in the Downtown Core
Priority 3 roads will be cleared after Priority 1 and 2 roads are complete. Priority 3 roads are any roads not classified as Priority 1 or 2 roads.
Windrows Resulting from Snow Clearing
Windrows are piles of snow that are left at the side of the road after the snow plow has cleared the road. These windrows may be at the bottom of your private driveway.
The City helps seniors 60+ and people with physical disabilities or medical conditions who are unable to clear the windrow on their own. Windrow clearing for eligible properties starts after the roads are plowed and the City endeavors to clear them as fast as possible. However, in extreme snowfalls, it may take us longer than you would like. If a faster level of service is required, or if you need your entire driveway cleared, you may prefer to hire a private snow plowing company.
